Holy thistle and its flavonoids are among the most widely used nutraceuticals in the United States and Europe, with a huge evidence base and a broad safety profile. Due to its powerful antioxidant effect, silymarin contributes to an increase in the level of two additional antioxidants: glutathione and superoxide dismutase, including in the renal tissue. Silymarin is concentrated in kidney cells, where it promotes recovery and regeneration, by increasing protein and nucleic acid synthesis. In a randomized controlled trial, it was also found to be effective in reducing proteinuria in patients with type 2 diabetes with nephropathy.
